WASHINGTON DC – A new free removable window decal for businesses to show their support for increasing the federal minimum wage is being offered by Business for a Fair Minimum Wage and the Main Street Alliance. The decal, which reads, “This Business Supports a $10.10 Federal Minimum Wage. Good for Business, Customers and Our Economy,” provides a visible way for businesses to participate in the growing momentum of business support across the country.
“Today’s inadequate minimum wage is hurting business and our economy. Business owners understand this, with polls showing strong majorities in favor of the increase to $10.10,” said Holly Sklar, CEO of Business for a Fair Minimum Wage. “Biz owners are much less partisan than Congress when it comes to a fair minimum wage, and this decal is a great way the business community can show support for raising the wage.”
"One business' employee is another business' customer," said Amanda Ballantyne, National Director of the Main Street Alliance. "Raising the minimum wage supports small business success by increasing community economic security, strengthening consumer demand, and ensuring that every job is an economy boosting job."
Growing business support for increasing the federal minimum was highlighted in a White House report released this week and a recent national poll, which found that a striking 61% of small business employers support increasing the federal minimum wage to $10.10, and then adjusting it annually to keep pace with the cost of living. This finding is higher than reported in previous small business polling.
The federal minimum wage has been set at $7.25 an hour since it was last increased five years ago in July 2009. It has less buying power than it had in 1950 and one-third less than in 1968, adjusted for inflation.
"We are proud to display this decal and stand with business owners around the country to ensure a $10.10 federal minimum wage is passed," said Marc Friedman, Co-Owner of A Few Cool Hardware Stores with nine locations in the District of Columbia and Maryland. "We have always supported higher wages because they make our workforce stronger, result in happier customers, and improve our bottom line."
