GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) -- With the New Year fast approaching, Amendment 70, the minimum wage increase, will soon go into effect. ...

For Emma Braddy, Amendment 70 is more than just a pay raise. “Paycheck to paycheck, every time, and there's often times where I don't have enough money to go grocery shopping, so I go a week just eating ramen and things like that," said Emma Braddy, an employee at Five 60 Salon & Spa. “I would be able to pay for things that are not just necessities – I could actually go out and do things and experience more."

Amendment 70 will raise the minimum wage from the current $8.31 an hour to $9.30 an hour beginning January 1, and eventually increase to $12 an hour by 2020. ...

Some businesses said the increase is something they can absorb, and more importantly, they believe it won't hurt the community.

"Even if we increased our prices commensurate with the increase in our payroll, it would only increase the price of our haircut a dollar," said Barbara Roberts, owner of Five 60 Salon & Spa.

Roberts said Amendment 70 can even put money back into the economy.

"Increasing our business potential is important, and this is the way to do it by putting more spending power into people’s hands," said Roberts. ...
